Multiphase meters have been commercially available for more than a decade and their use is becoming more common. Even so, the operational experience of meters based on conventional technologies is mixed. The development of the MPM meter was based on a clearly stated need among field operators for a high performance multiphase meter, with the ability to deliver more advanced functions and accurate measurements on a consistent basis.
To achieve these goals, MPM have successfully attacked and resolved well known and extremely difficult challenges on a broad scale, focusing on:
- Eliminating measurement errors due to annular gas concentration (in vertical flow)
- Capturing rapid fluctuations in the flow (slugs, etc) by obtaining extremely fast repeat measurements
- Measuring flow rates of oil much more precisely, by doing more accurate watercut measurements at high watercut and high GVF
- Covering life of the field operations, by enabling multiphase and wetgas meters to be combined in one single unit, and implementing automatic and instantaneous switching between wetgas and multiphase mode
- Measure water conductivity rather than require it as input from user, to simplify operations and reduce measurement errors
